THE HISTORY OF AYUTTHAYA KINGDOM
This is the first temple we will visit today here in Ayutthaya City the Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon and the Wat word stands for Temple. This temple is a Buddhist temple and was constructed by King U-Thong in 1357 A.D. this was also called The Wat Pakaew or the Great Monastery of Auspicious Victory and then Phra Wanratana who ordained to accommodate to the monks of Wat Pa Kaew suggested to King Naresuan the Great to build a large Chedi or Pagoda in 1592 A.D. There are three buildings in the area the first building to visit is the Main Chedi with 62 meters high and it is surrounded by different kinds of Buddha inside. The second building is The Ordination Hall or The Ubosot where we can also see a one big Buddha sitting in the center and before we enter the hall area make sure to remove our shoes before we enter and the last one is the Vihara of the Reclining Buddha.
This place is the southeastern area of Ayutthaya and its easy to navigate cuz this can be found in the eastern side of the road. People here are friendly. There are also ancient canals inside the east and west side of the temple.
What To Do?
One of the most important things to do here in this place is to climb this very high tower built by the ancestors of their former king. Seen inside this chedi is the mysterious well that is very deep where people began making wishes as they tossed coins into these well and a Buddhas sitting on the side of the well that is circling.
Right next to the chedi is a large lake where you can see large turtles that are freely cared for and fed by the caretakers in the area. There are also souvenir shops and food for visitors to the area.

- Do not throw the trash inside the temple
- Wear formal attire especially for women
- Do not make noise inside the temple
- Remove shoes when inside the temple
- Do not imitate the position or appearance of the Buddha when taking a picture next to the Buddha
Tips and Expectations
- Only wear light clothing so as not to sweat the body
- Join in a group tour to avoid paying a large amount of cash on a private car or van
- Bring drinking water to prevent dehydration
- The temples in Ayutthaya are very different from the temples in Bangkok
